Cherry Red Records wants to hear your England songs ...the ones we like will be included on a Download Compilation to coincide with the World Cup this Summer!!!
The infamous England football song started life in 1970 with the legendary Cliff Portwood encouraging members of the '66 squad to join him for "Up There England" and "You'll Never Walk Alone".
1970 was also the year that the West Ham boys Hurst, Moore and Peters released the single "Oh Sweet England", while "Back Home" reached No.1 in the charts.
Since then England's Football Songs have had a mixed history; it took another 20 years until this very British institution topped the charts again in 1990 with "World In Motion" by New Order which also featured Keith Allen, Gazza & of course the John Barnes Rap!
In 1998 the officials got it wrong: "(How Does it Feel to Be) on Top of the World" was thrashed by The Lightning Seeds' "Three Lions '98" featuring Frank Skinner & David Baddiel. This enduring terrace anthem was reworked following the popularity of its original release for the European Championships two years previously. This was the year of the unofficial entry, with Keith Allen returning (this time with Alex James & Damien Hirst) as Fat Les to unleash the rabble rousing "Vindaloo" on the world.
2002's entry - Ant and Dec's "We're On The Ball" failed to set our balls on fire and we don't even recall the entries from 2006. So this leads us to believe the world (and more importantly the England Squad) needs a new great World Cup anthem for the coming summer in South Africa. And seeing as Cherry Red Records already has the world's largest collection of football related repertoire, we thought we should be the ones to kick things off...
We want to hear your World Cup Songs for 2010!!!
